Jennifer Garner to Star in Movie About Accountant Wife Convicted of Embezzling $17M
'Fruitcake Fraud' to Tell the Story of the Collin Street Bakery Embezzlement Scandal
Jennifer Garner is set to star in a new movie based on the true story of accountant Vicky Jo Wilcher, who was convicted of embezzling $17 million from the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas. The film, titled Fruitcake Fraud, will tell the story of the bakery's demise and the investigation that led to Wilcher's arrest and conviction.
Wilcher was the chief financial officer of the Collin Street Bakery, a popular tourist destination known for its fruitcakes. In 2013, the bakery filed for bankruptcy after an audit revealed that Wilcher had embezzled millions of dollars over a period of years.
Investigators found that Wilcher had used the stolen money to finance a lavish lifestyle, including a large home, expensive cars, and a private jet. She also made large donations to her local church and other charitable organizations.
Wilcher was arrested in 2014 and pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering charges. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay $17 million in restitution.
Fruitcake Fraud will be directed by Jared Hess, who previously directed the films Napoleon Dynamite and Gentlemen Broncos. The screenplay was written by Emily Bass and Betsy Giffen.
The film is set to be released in 2023.
